31-01-2012 Warren Miller shoot in japan

Last week i got the call from Warren Miller to go with them on a trip to japan, to shoot for their new movie! Four days later I was in munich at the airport and flew to Tokio and then Hokkaido up north. It felt a bit hard to leave austria, but i got those last 2 sunny days at home and then I left, so it was not that bad. Now we (Tyler, Tom and Danny Day) are here at the Black Diamond Lodge in Niseko village. If you ever go to japan - go there - those guys now the area quite well. After they told us, you will be lucky if you see the sun once in 2 weeks, we were pretty happy when we got up on the first day and it was blue bird. And yeah we got 30cm over night and the upper skiarea wasn´t open since 1 week. Next day we went in the trees, which is pretty cool here - pillows everywhere! Yesterday and today it was supposed to be snowing, but both times it was blue again - so we went to once to an area where we skinned all day long and did a few runs in a really nice bowl; today we found some not bad things either - we probably did 10 -12 runs each and we pretty much destroyed the whole face. check out some pics soon and also check out Tyler´s blog, where you can find some more pics.

08-01-2012 powdays in the alps

Oh yeah! The last 2 or 3 weeks were the best powder days ever. We had already a not bad base, but we defenitely needed a bit more to do some bigger stuff. 2 weeks later it´s nearly to much snow to ski. I can´t remember when the alps or austria had so much snow, no sun since quite a long time ago, probably only 3 blue bird days since it started snowing in mid of december. It´s like a dream, nearly every day we had a reset dump! No tracks anymore, did so much runs till we couldn´t feel our legs anymore. One day, the 31st of december, I overslept new year´s eve, but was ready to shred next day at 8am. Last thursday a crazy snowstorm was in the forecast and austria, swiss and france got hammered again! up to 2m in 2 days, that is not a joke! Yeah it is possible in the alps, you don´t have to go to BC. Last 3 days we were shooting treeruns, but it was quite hard to get some good shots. Heavy wind and snowfall, snow falling down from trees, fog in the lenses of the camera...but we got some shots.

looks like it is clearing up next days and getting a bit warm, so the avalanche danger is going down, but take it easy next days, it´s sketchy out there! shred on next storm is already in the forecast

02-01-2012 La Nina in the alps

Last days of 2011 have been pretty amazing. More than 60cm in 2 days - treeruns all day long!
little edit of what was going on last days soon; now it got warm and rained all the way to the top.
That means we have an even better base than before and looks like more than 50cm on the way next days pretty much all over the alps. Film season starts these days - hope it will be a good one!

25-12-2011 powdays in the alps

Hey folks

After i came back home from Whistler at beginning of december it started snowing. And then it started snowing pretty hard, at least in france or the west side of the alps. 2 weeks ago I was planning a trip to france and italy - wherever the snow was, but on the day I wanted to leave I checked the weather forecast again and it looked like there was a heavy snowfall coming in to austria! So we got more than 2 meters at the arlberg region and also some good snow in the valley. The last 2 weeks were the deepest pow days ever, but also the most bad weather days in a long time. Now it got warm and we had avi danger 4, but at least we have a solid base. New snow is already in the forecast, so looks like the new year brings snow!

Last week we flew to Vancouver and drove the highway up to Whistler. Thursday was the opening day at Blackcomb and yeah it was a very special day, as also the locals like Pettit said! At the right time, at the right spot, thats what it is all about in freeskiing - at least if you like hip deep pow.

30-05-2011 norway - back in winter

After the K2 shooting in Seattle, I was back home in austria for a few days. Riversurfing, swimming, barbecue,biking...lying in the sun and enyoing life and got massiv sun burned! Right now i´m in Tromso, norway since 3 days - with Mc Fly and Michi Neumann shooting for different projects. At first all 3 of us were not really motivated to leave summer and go back to winter. But now after 2 days or pretty much 1 day/night shooting, we are stoked again! The scenery up here in the north is unbelievable; the sun is shining 24h (if it´s not cloudy and it´s often cloudy) and spring is full on. Green and warm at the coast line and cold and still some spring snow up on the mountain.
Last night we started skinning up the mountain at 9pm - reached the top at midnight and started to shot around 00:30 am! Yes 30min after midnight and the sun was shining! Feels pretty strange...
But it turned out pretty good - stay tuned for some shots; flying back home tomorrow

Back home from Canada since 2 weeks, a few good spring days at the park in Hintertux - flying to Seattle for a K2 shooting on the weekend and after that it looks like I will have a shooting in norway - Lyngen lodge for a few days! Hopefully there is the chance to stop by at the Lofoten surf spot. Stay tuned for some pics

24-04-2011 Whistler BC

Whistler BC - hell yeah, what a awesome area! Unfortunately we had not such good weather the last days. Scouting some lines and stuff we could do was pretty much all we did the last days. Then it cleared up, at least for a few hours. But yeah, it´s a bit different over here with filming lines in the ski area and close to the ski area - everything is tracked within a few hours! NOT COOL! So yeah was time to get the bird in the air and fly in an area somewhere outside in the backcountry. First day we got a heli drop off up on a glacier - at the time we were up there, clouds came in again and the shitshow started again. Sitting, waiting, wishing - clearedup for 5 minutes, thats the time we had to do our line (3 rider - different lines - what a hazzle) 1 line a day - sucks!
But everything changed yesterday, when it cleared up and we had a blue bird pow day. We flew to a zone where MSP was a few days before. Everybody was stoked at we flew in there and when we saw all that spines, drops, pillows...
First run was a easy run to check the conditions and gettin warm. After this run everybody was pumped up with adrenalin and the Huck feast started. Probably one of the best days ever and thats pretty much on the last day of the season!

19-04-2011 Hello US and A

The euro crew (Seb Hannemann, Mc Fly, Birgar(Gunnar) and I went to Mt. Baker last week on thursday to shoot for the Aestivation project. After a few downdays Mt. Baker showed all his beauty on a blue bird pow day last week friday! We got up at 6am and couldn´t believe all that amount of snow, the massiv cornices, spines, pillows...hell yeah! We hiked up the Shuksan arm, following a few locals (Adam U) who told us where we should go and where we shouldn´t go, because of avalanche danger!
After the first line I couln´t believe how sick it was to shred that sticky pow in steep faces, but we also had a few little pockets which released on those runs. So yeahh, at the last run high clouds came in and I dropped in before the light was totally gone. Few deep pow turns, a drop, one turn, avalanche broke and i fell over my last cliff I wanted to jump. Bummer man, lost my ski and my Go Pro, but luckely I stayed pretty much on the top, at least when the avalanche stopped.
After that day we decided to stay in the trees for the next days; There was a sketchy layer out there since march, where all the new snow slides down. So yeah, there would be some more realy sick stuff to do up there, but to dangerous. Now we are at Whistler and trying to get some more shots over here.

24-03-2011 Buon giorno Amigo

Winter is back - for a little time! At least above 2500m. 10 days ago I went to south tirol to shred some pow with friends, without shooting, only party skiing. After 2 days I checked the weather forecast and couldn´t believe, that my home area was supposed to get more than 50cm in 24h!!! So we went back, but the +50cm came down pretty wet, so yeah - that sucks and it was dangerous too. Since Sunday I´m back on the road to find some powder in the south alps. And we were lucky and found some really good snow - stoked. Now I´m here at St. Moritz for 2 days and after that I go back to south tyrol for the Marmot team meeting. And if conditions improve next 2 weeks at AK...

14-03-2011 spring time is on

I was at the Arlberg the last week. We were ski touring and found some really good snow, at least for pictures.
After those hiking days and 3 weeks filming with Nimbus, I needed a break. I went to Fieberbrunn to watch the competition of the Freeride World tour and to meet some friends. Congrats to the austrian boys: Häusl, Haunholder, Tölderer, Örley, Zipser and my team mates from K2, Tom Leitner and Gri Reichenberger, who both had a WildCard for this Event and did pretty well! Yeah party was intense too.
Now I´m checking the weather forecast pretty much and also checking flights to BC and AK. Hopefully everything works out - stay tuned

Heli day at courmayeur - what a day! Blue bird, powder, but still a bad base; Last wednesday we went heli skiing with Pellisier Helicopter at Courmayuer. Raffa and Davido, friends from ALO, our italian photographer joined us. Our first drop off was around 9am, so we had really good light conditions to shoot. Everybody got a couple of good shots this day and we finished it with a massiv snowball fight on the cat track on the way back to the cars. After 2 days more shooting, we left Courmayeur on Friday and drove 8h back to the zillervalley. Luckily we have some really nice cars, so it´s not that bad to drive so long. We will continue shooting till thursday and then we will see what happens next...

Today it is cloudy and bad light for filming, so we decided to stay down in the valley and shoot around Courmayeur and have a few Espresso - Eric (Starsky) and Weewolf (Hutch) are leading with 5 Espressos...
Looks like it is blue bird tomorrow and we get a Heli ride to a really nice face on the backside of Mont Blanc.

20-02-2011 Nimbus trip 1.1

I´m here at courmayeur, on the italian side of Mont Blanc with Pollard and crew since 1 week. Pretty big mountains and nice terrain. We also got a bit of powder, but still a super sketchy base! So much rocks under 30cm powder... I hurt my shoulder a bit on the first day filming, during landing a backflip out of the trees on my face. We had 2 blue bird days, which were pretty good, but we need for sure more of them - hopefully it will change soon!

31-01-2011 finaly some good pow

After 1 month we got some really good snow! 2 days treeskiing and shreddin around during the snowfall! Then I was at a K2 event at Kitzbühel, where we got an another 40cm over night! So sick, I was so stoked to get out and shred some deep pow. Next day I was at home at mayrhofen, where we also got 30 -35cm. What a perfect day, not that much people and skiing with friends, without shooting. On friday I was up on the moutnain again and we got a couple of good shots. Sometimes a bit sharky, but all in all some great powder! The last jump of the day was a easy 180 of a cliff, but I landed a bit on the side and hit my shin pretty bad, there is still some blood in it, which makes me not that happy in my ski boot! damn 1 week off and then I will be back shooting 1 month with a US movie production!

24-01-2011 what a weekend

Finaly we got some fresh pow in the alps! Roman Lachner from skiing mag arrived at friday night at my place. After a really heavy sauna run with "Sauna Hansi" we had a couple oft soft drinks ;) and were talking about the pictures we need!
Saturday morning we met Felix "Bolognese" Wiemers and his girlfriend at the ski area in Mayrhofen at 8am. Felix prefers to open the lift station together with the lift guy ;) After a couple of good lines and good pow pictures up on the mountain, we decided to go down earlier and get ready for a night session around mayrhofen, together with Hannes Drexl.
Felix and Hannes did this crazy wallride at this old gondola station - so sick! We nearly had to stop the shooting because a security guy arrived and wasn´t that happy what he saw, hahah omg.
We came home to my place at 11:30 pm and were super tired after that long shooting day.

Sunday morning the crew went up to the Vans Penken PArk to do some more shots in the park and in the powder.
Unfortunately Hannes Drexl crashed and broke his collarbone! Fuck, what bad news after we came back from the backcountry to meet up at the park. I went straight to my girlfriends working place, where she did a X-ray and after 2h he had surgery to fix his collarbone! Roman alias Sauna Hansi, Felix and I went up to this big dam to shot that massiv wallride! Dude that was pretty sketchy! After we finished the jib session we stoped by at the sportclinic to visit Hannes after his surgery. He was already on his feets to get his stuff together and drive home with his mum.

What a weekend in the chillervally...
PS: Sauna Hansi and I had a really nice sauna session on sunday evening; My eyes are still burning and Hansis skin is still red!

Last 3 days were amazing! Friday was one of those special days.... face shots after face shots, pretty sick!
Went out with my teammate Seb Hannemann, my brother Flo and Chris Ebenbichler to do some epic tree runs.
Yesterday and today was bad weather and more snowfall too, but still nice powder.

Last weeks I was a few times ski touring, back racing on my GS skis with my dad and we also had 2 pretty good pow days!

Now it looks like a big storm is coming in again and bringing some fresh snow.

09-05-2010 update

After 5 days in the hospital of Lienz I was at home for 2 days! Till Saturday i was in another hospital, where I had a surgery.
I broke some bones in my face, when I hit a rock at the crash. I also hit my back and my knee, but it´s not that bad. Now I´m recovering in the chillervalley - at home - sweet! Thx the gods that I survived this "No Fall Zone"!
Looking forward to Bali in a few weeks....

01-05-2010 Großglockner - Pallavicini Rinne

Unser Vorhaben, die berühmt berüchtigte Pallavicini Rinne zu befahren, endete mit einem schweren Sturz.
Es galt den Großglockner mit knapp 3800 Meter auf Skiern zu bezwingen. Doch der Aufstieg war schwerer als wir uns gedacht hatten! Nach drei Seillängen abseilen, direkt neben dem Glocknerkreuz, standen wir im oberen Drittel der ca. 55° steilen, vereisten Rinne! Da auf dem Grad zum Kreuz reger Betrieb herrschte und wir mit den anderen Bergsteigern noch gescherzt hatten, sie sollten aufpassen, dass sie uns keine Steine runterlassen, geschah um ca. 12:00 Uhr der entscheidende Steinschlag. Ich teilte meinen Kollegen mit, dass ich die Rinne schnellstmöglich verlassen möchte, da wir die Situation nicht mehr sicher vorkam.
Dann lief alles sehr schnell. Ich fuhr bis dahin, wo sich die Rinne das erste mal weiter öffnete, um dort auf meine Kollegen zu warten. Doch kurz bevor ich diesen Punkt erreichte, hat es mir den Ski "aufgeschlagen" und das Schicksal nahm seinen Lauf...
Ich überschlug mich so oft, dass ich nicht mehr wusste wo oben und unten ist. Nach 400hm blieb ich liegen. Das war auch der Punkt wo mich der ÖAMTC Heli per Taubergung abholte.
Wie durch ein Wunder habe ich mir nur "leichte" Verletzungen zugezogen!!!

Danke nochmal an meine Kameraden für die Erste Hilfe, ebenfalls dem Flugretter des ÖAMTC Hubschraubers mit dem ich noch über das anstehende Gauderfest scherzen durfte und den Ärzten und Krankenschwestern im KH Lienz.
Und nicht zu vergessen, meine Eltern und meine Freundin!
